Some of the most vulnerable in society reside in care homes and nursing homes. Most people who reside there receive an excellent level of care.

Nursing Home Claims
There are exceptions, however, where failings in care by the staff who are responsible for caring for the vulnerable and elderly result in poor care and medical treatment which leads to injury and can tragically lead to death. This can result in a claim for medical negligence.

Examples of claims against care homes and nursing homes include:

$
Bed sores and pressure ulcers:

These can occur when a patient is not moved regularly in his or her bed. Bed sores can result in the patient getting an infection which is slow to heal or may not heal at all.

Bed sores can also arise where a plaster is put on incorrectly after a fracture.

$
Medication errors:

Medication errors can seriously affect an elderly person, both physically and mentally. These errors can occur when care staff do not keep correct records of the medication a patient or resident has received, and this can result in the wrong medication being administered.

$
Neglect or abuse:

There have been considerable investigations arising from neglect or abuse in care homes in Ireland. Where families learn of neglect or abuse of their loved ones, whilst in the care of someone responsible for protecting them, it can be devastating.

$
Head injuries and fractures from falls:

Elderly people are particularly vulnerable to falling and care must be given where patients or residents are deemed to be a ‘falls risk’. It is imperative that the correct mobility aids are provided, and that patients or residents are supervised where appropriate.

It is also imperative that if a fall occurs, patients or residents are monitored for any deterioration in their cognitive state and referred for medical care where appropriate to ensure that they did not sustain a bleed on the brain.
